                     AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL

As a young boy in Melbourne, Australia-- Australian Rules Football  is the sport of choice.
I loved Aussie Rules and was good enough at the game to be signed to play professionally for The Melbourne Football Club.
I decided to forego my 'footy' career and concentrate on golf when I was 17 years of age because I loved the individuality of golf and the longevity of a career in golf when compared to football and the possible injuries of a rough and tumble sport.

Since The World Golf Rankings were established in 1984 there have been 15 players who have reached the ultimate number 1 ranking-- Norman, Ballesteros, Langer, Woosnam, Lyle, Faldo, Couples, Lehman, Els, Duval, Singh ,Woods , Westwood , Kaymer & Donald
I have been fortunate to play with each and every one of them bar the most recent two in tournaments and practice rounds-- there can be no better way to learn than from watching the greats up close and personal

Greg Norman was my hero obviously when I was a   young kid growing up in Australia. I have played with Greg quite often and met him on my 15th birthday when I qualified for The 1982 Victorian Open and became the youngest player to tee off in a major Australian golf event. We even have the same birthdate and shared a cake that week.- What a thrill!

Doug Sanders won 20 events on the PGA Tour. He was renowned for his colorful clothing and matching shoes thus earning the nickname; 'The Peacock Of The Fairways'.  He had 13 top 10's in Major Championships and finished runner-up in 4 different Major events, the '59 PGA, '61 US Open. '66 British Open and the heartbreaking playoff loss to Jack Nicklaus at the '70 British Open. His golfing skills and charity work, especially for the junior golfers of the world is unparalleled from a golf legend.
*************************************************************************************

I recently had the good fortune to interview Doug Sanders about his golf swing, the players he competed against and his thoughts on equipment and a host of other topics.
He gave me some terrific answers and thoughts that not only relate to golf but can be used in all walks of life.
I highly recommend Doug Sanders for your next golf outing. The life he has lead is beyond compare and it would be a tremendous experience for all.

                Interviews recorded on February 16 & 17 2011

Doug Sanders was always placed in the basket of 'weird swings' of professional golf.
It is very obvious when we look at the following swing sequence that
Sanders knew exactly what he was doing to achieve ball control.

He may of had a
'strange' backswing....but as we will learn on later pages of this website....the backswing doesn't matter.

His backswing
set him up for all the correct swing intentions based on his feel and how to achieve the correct motion through the impact arena .

The area of the swing shown below is
the true crux of the golf swing.. and
Doug Sanders did it extremely well.

**************************************************************************
I have played most of the world's great golf courses that have tested all the great players since golf began.
The history of golf is worth tracing. What other sport can you walk the fairways with your heroes and rub shoulders with the greats in a pro-am event and walk on the same fairway that Jones, Sarazen, Snead, Hogan, Nelson, Nicklaus and Palmer trudged along in years gone by..none
Golf is a true gentleman's game that has upheld the tradition of respect and rules and is still self policed by players of every level.
It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of it in some small way.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

As a young kid growing up watching golf on television, the players were larger than life. The courses looked unbelievably difficult. I had dreams though and my golf clubs were cleaned and polished and in perfect number sequence each night. I rushed through homework in between swinging my clubs and hitting a plastic ball around my parent's house in my own version of golf's major championships- albeit in my own living room !
Every person can dream. Dreams don't often come true. But anything IS possible if you desire it enough. My dream was to become a professional golfer touring the world playing courses such as Augusta and Oakmont and Carnoustie and other dastardly difficult courses I had seen whilst staying up all hours of the night to view golf, whenever it was on television.
I lived that dream. The dream is still alive as not all my goals have been reached. I still believe I have many dreams to reach. I won't share them as they are MY dreams and if I tell them to someone then they become their dreams too... NEVER let anyone tell you that you CAN'T do something. Never share your dreams.. make them your own
Anything is possible- remember that - ANYTHING...

On a personal note life sometimes doesn't always go as planned. I wanted to add the following video just in the hope that one day the person mentioned in this video will understand what truly happened and why I have never seen them since that day back in February 1995 when I found out this truth. I have always missed you Emily:    *video below*

I played for close to 3 seasons on the Japan PGA Tour. In 1992 I lost a playoff for the Daiwa KBC Tournament  * VIDEO BELOW*
The video is in Japanese and I have added my own thoughts as to what I was thinking during the heat of the battle.

I had six (6) Top 10 results in 1993 in Japan and still played some events there in 1994 as well before concentrating on Europe and America.
Living in Australia made the Japan PGA Tour readily accessible. There was only a one hour time change. So it was not uncommon for me to take the 9 hour flight overnight to Tokyo and then wake up in the morning on arrival and actually go play a practice round refreshed and on the correct time zone. I had an apartment near Tokyo to use when based there but I would mostly just fly home to Australia after a 3 or 4 week stint of playing events.

The Japanese Tour was a great learning experience with the language barrier and the different culture. I also got to play with some great Japanese players such as Jumbo Ozaki, Jet Ozaki, Joe Ozaki, Shigeki Maruyama, Tommy Nakajima as well as foreigners such as Graham Marsh, Brian Jones, Roger MacKay, Todd Hamilton, Carlos Franco, David Ishii and many others who had very successful careers in Japan and were truly great players that are not mentioned much in golfing circles because of Japanese golf not really being broadcast on a global scale.

Did I mention the prizemoney was great up there in those years also !!!

I have always enjoyed golf books. They are a great way to get inside the writers head and see what they are actually thinking about during the swing and what intentions they have.
I have a great golf library of close to 400 books by various people.
I managed to get a few signed by players who I am lucky enough to call friends also from playing golf..... Great keepsakes to have for the future
